New Zealand National Film Unit presents Pictorial Parade No. 134 (1962)
Operation Deep Freeze is the codename for a series of United States missions to Antarctica. The missions are organised by the United States military. Operation Deep Freeze prepared a permanent research station and paved the way for more exhaustive research in later Deep Freeze operations. Since the 1950s when Antarctic scientific expeditions began, the United States Air Force, Air National Guard and Royal New Zealand Air Force have been stationed in Christchurch as part of Operation Deep Freeze. Irregular flights were made up to 1963 when the advent of long range C-121 Constellations and C-103's brought a new dimension to Antarctic research and discovery. When the aircraft of Operation Deep Freeze began their long haul flights, the journey from Christchurch to McMurdo Sound could be made in a few hours, enabling equipment to be flown in quickly.
Operations from Christchurch to Antarctica still exist today. During the Antarctic flying season - generally from August to February - large Hercules and other specialist aircraft can be seen on the Antarctic Apron north of the main passenger terminals, loading freight and personnel for the 4,000km flight to McMurdo Sound. During the season, military aircraft make around 100 flights to the Antarctic and move more than 5,500 passengers and 1400 tonnes of cargo. Over 75% of the world's scientists flying to Antarctica depart from Christchurch.
