When this male yemen chameleon was referred to me via the local reptile vet he couldn't feed himself, his limbs had so little calcium that they were bendy and he crawled along unable to hold himself above the ground as his limbs were too weak. On an x-ray the bones of his limbs were invisible as they were so deficient in calcium, his jaw wasn't strong and the outline of both his jaw and casque were fuzzy.

After just 3 weeks of intense care and rehabilitation this video was the result! He is now happy and healthy. My regime was successful partly due to his young age when he came to me - his bones were still developing - but mainly due to my dedication of doing the following between 6-8 times a day:

Feeding with repashy grub pie mixed with a little ground up cuttlefish bone (i.e. Pure calcium powder) at first syringed into his mouth as a liquid but later on prepared into a gel and force fed.

Then I'd wet my finger and dip it into pure calcium powder which I'd gently rub between his gums. I also syringe fed reptiboost mixed with water several times a day to keep him hydrated.

I didn't bother with feeding insects at the stage as the repashy grub pie contains 75% insect protein along with all the essential vitamins and minerals necessary for lizards. Once strong enough I advised to feed insects that are gutloaded (which is essential) as well as those that are naturally higher in calcium and more nutritious such as butterworms, calciworms and cockroaches.

I put him in a smaller Exoterra glass cage with a thick towel covering the base to cushion any falls and provided a few jungle vine branches to hold onto. The essential UVB was provided by an Arcadia D3+ flood lighting unit with a 12% bulb. There was also a habistat high powered heat mat stuck to the back to provide heat. (My house is around 25°C most of the time due to all my animals so I didn't need a heat lamp!)

After 3 weeks I took him to the vets for another x-ray. Astonishingly in just a short space of time all his limb bones were clearly defined and visible. His jaw had straightened and the overall x-ray had much more bones and the increase in calcium was obvious to see.
